Laboratory practice in crystallization
The Laboratories Crystallization Courses (LCC) is a group of courses focusing on the teaching of crystallization techniques typically used at a lab scale to obtain crystals of substances of different nature. LCC is divided in 5 blocks of practices from which the students can choose two (7 ECTS) or four (14 ECTS). The first course will cover the characterization of crystallizing solutions (spectrophotometer, dynamic light scattering, potenciometry, etc.) while a second group (blocks 2 and 3) deals with the implementations of the different crystallization techniques (batch, vapour diffusion, counter diffusion, solvent exchange, etc). The 4th block pays special attention to techniques based on the use of gels for the crystallization of bio-macromolecules and small molecules. The last block will cover the use of different instruments (LCM-DIM, AFM and Interferometry) for in situ characterization of crystal growth. Theoretical concepts, instrumentations characteristics, application and fundaments, will be reviewed. In all cases courses can be adapted to the students main interest (i.e. biological macromolecules, organic compounds or small molecules).
